Bark and Bjork Bar Stools (2022)
Made from materials harvested from the Berea College Forest, these red oak and hickory bar stools were an independent class project. They stand 35” tall with a seat width of 15 1/2” and depth of 14 ½”. The seat and backrest were woven with hickory bark in a traditional Herringbone pattern.
Chair Prototyping at Student Crafts
As we work to design a chair for Berea College Student Crafts in my last year of school, we have been doing a lot of prototyping and remaking chair designs.
Linnea Chair (2022)
The Linnea Chair was the first chair that I ever made while I was assisting a class at PineCroft. Working with green Red Oak was a new experience to me and I was surprised how comfortable I was with it. The Ladderback form was so elegant that I decided to embroider the lavenders shaker tape I had chosen for the seat to add to complement that elegance.
"Just One More" (2022)
As 2022 neared its end, I realized that between July and December I had made around eight chairs! I had committed to finishing all the projects that I had started before starting any new ones, which I was able to do, for the most part :) but one chair remained. The Stick Chair class that I took in July at the Lost Art Press had sent me home with a kit of pieces to make another stick chair. With one week left where I had access to the woodshop before heading home for break, I decided to make "just one more" chair. With the time between exams and other project work, I made this 3-legged, low back chair that now sits at my floor loom in my college apartment.
Broomcorn Backrest Chair (2023)
In a never ending effort to find ways to incorporate other department's scraps in my projects, I made my first chair of 2023. The backrest is woven with bundles of broomcorn scraps from the next door broom shop that have been hand bound with cotton string. The broomcorn adds color, texture, and some comfort to the chair.
